Best Fitness Trackers for Swimming
Swimming is the hardest workout for a tracker to handle, because water blocks the optical heart-rate sensor and the device must survive submersion. A swim-capable tracker needs specific features.
Water resistance first
Look for at least 5 ATM water resistance, which means it's rated for swimming. A watch rated only for splashes or shallow water won't survive regular pool sessions.
Swim-specific features
- Stroke detection and lap counting
- SWOLF and pace metrics for swimmers
- Open-water GPS if you swim outside
Lap counting and stroke detection are the features that make a tracker useful in the pool. A basic waterproof band without these just gets wet without telling you anything useful.
What to know
Optical heart-rate sensors don't work well in water, so wrist-based heart rate during swimming is unreliable. If accurate swim heart rate matters, you need a chest strap designed for swimming.
Buy a tracker with 5 ATM resistance and swim metrics if you swim regularly. It turns pool time into tracked, measurable training instead of just getting wet.
