Best Phone Cases for Drop Protection and Style

A phone case has one job: absorb the impact when you drop it. Beyond that, it's about grip, bulk, and whether you can stand to look at it. Here's how to match the case to your habits.

Drop protection: what the ratings mean

Cases are often rated for drop height, but the honest measure is simpler: does it have raised edges around the screen and camera, and does it cover the corners? Corners take the most impact, so look for air-pocket corners or a shock-absorbing frame.

For a clumsy phone or a kid's phone, a rugged case with a two-layer design — hard outer shell over a soft inner liner — is the proven standard. For everyone else, a slim case with corner protection and a raised lip is enough.

Case types

  • Clear cases show off the phone but yellow over time; buy a brand with an anti-yellowing claim if you care
  • Slim cases feel great but protect less; fine if you rarely drop your phone
  • Leather and fabric cases age nicely but offer minimal impact protection
  • Rugged cases protect the most but add real bulk

MagSafe compatibility is worth checking if you have an iPhone or use magnetic mounts. Cases without the magnet ring make MagSafe chargers and mounts grip poorly or not at all.

Our honest take

Most people are best served by a slim case with corner protection and a raised camera lip, in a color they like. Skip the $60 'premium' cases unless you want the material — a $15 case with the right design protects just as well.
