How Long Should a Phone Battery Last?

A phone battery doesn't fail suddenly; it degrades a little every charge cycle. Understanding the normal timeline tells you when to replace it and how to slow the decline.

The normal lifespan

Most lithium batteries hold about 80% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles, which is roughly two to three years of daily use. After that, the decline accelerates and daily battery life gets noticeably shorter.

Signs it's wearing out

  • The battery percentage drops fast, especially below 50%
  • The phone shuts down unexpectedly at low percentages
  • It needs charging more than once a day with the same use

How to slow the decline

  • Keep the charge between 20% and 80% when convenient
  • Avoid heat, which is the biggest battery killer
  • Avoid leaving it at 100% or 0% for long periods

When capacity falls near 80% or the daily battery no longer lasts, a battery replacement is usually cheaper than a new phone and restores it to like-new endurance.
